Aselsan's Revolutionary Interface Elevates Electric Vehicle Experience

Ozge Fati Duman Designs Award-Winning Cluster Interface for Aselsan

Aselsan's latest instrument cluster, designed by Ozge Fati Duman, merges high-resolution display technology with user-centric design to transform the electric vehicle dashboard into an intuitive control center, earning a Silver A' Design Award.

The electric vehicle landscape is witnessing a significant transformation with Aselsan's new generation instrument cluster, masterfully crafted by designer Ozge Fati Duman. This dashboard display is not merely a functional component of electric vehicles but a testament to the harmonious blend of technology and user experience. The high-resolution screen offers a vibrant color palette, enhancing the interaction between the driver and the vehicle's electric soul.

Duman's inspiration stemmed from the desire to refine a critical touchpoint in public transportation vehicles, ensuring that drivers are immersed in the technological and electrical essence of their environment. The result is a dashboard that not only conveys information but also encapsulates the spirit of electric mobility. The interface stands out with its minimalistic yet sharp design, which aims to engage users without overwhelming them, employing a combination of 2D and shaded 3D graphics to create a sense of depth and layering.

Developed using Figma for UX/UI designs and prototypes, the Aselsan Cluster Interface boasts a 12.3-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels. The design's unique properties lie in its ability to act as a conduit between the driver and the vehicle, offering a clean and intuitive driving experience. Critical warning messages are categorized by color groups, allowing drivers to quickly assess and prioritize alerts based on their urgency.

Interaction with the cluster is facilitated through a strategically designed button group, which includes gear selection, a rotary knob for menu navigation, and additional buttons for home, back, and brightness adjustments. The speedometer is uniquely calibrated for speed-limited areas, capping at 25 km/h, reflecting the specific operational needs of the vehicles equipped with this interface.

The design journey, which began in August 2021 and concluded in January 2024 in Ankara, was underpinned by extensive research. Duman and the team conducted benchmark and field studies to gauge current functional and visual trends, followed by iterative design and user testing with professional commercial vehicle drivers. These efforts ensured that the final product not only met technical specifications but also resonated with the end-users' preferences and requirements.

Overcoming the challenge of creating a next-generation interface that is both expressive and user-friendly, the Aselsan Cluster Interface is a paradigm of how design can elevate the driving experience. The interface's success is further validated by its Silver A' Design Award, distinguishing it as a top-tier design that embodies innovation and professional excellence. With its intellectual property rights secured by Aselsan in 2023, this interface is poised to redefine the standards of electric vehicle dashboards.
